Disney Lops 'Ladies and Gentlemen,' Bounces 'Boys and Girls' in the Name of Inclusion

Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement: Disney is doing away with announcing “Ladies and gentlemen.”

As reported by ABC News, Orlando’s Walt Disney Resort saw the return of its Magic Kingdom fireworks spectacular last week.

But while it was closed due to the pandemic, the Happiest Place in the World polished its presentation.

Hence, the big show curiously lacked a famous introduction denoting adult males and females.

Also edited out: “boys and girls.”

The change comes courtesy of a “broader effort.”

So clarified a company spokesperson to ABC.

The Mouse is on the move.

In April, Disney updated the key components of its customer service.

For more than 65 years, there were four:

  • Safety
  • Courtesy
  • Show
  • Efficiency

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome the fifth:

From the Disney Parks Blog at the time:

[W]hen we asked our cast how we could better cultivate a culture of belonging, they suggested the addition of a fifth key: the key of Inclusion. Like The Four Keys before them, The 5 Keys – with Inclusion at the heart – will continue to guide us as we interact with guests, collaborate together, create the next generation of Disney products and experiences, and make critical decisions about the future of our business.

As for the deletion of any reference to sex before fireworks — reduced to “Good evening, dreamers of all ages” — the internet blew up.

A few responses:

  • “They don’t have to worry about offending me because I won’t be visiting this place again, my family loved Disney as for the past 50 years but I won’t be visiting Cancel Culture Land in this world of tomorrow. You don’t include everyone by negating others.”
  • “Disney is a financial behemoth that pays researchers and marketing execs to find what the majority of its paying patrons want and prefer. And this is it. It’s called free market capitalism.”
  • “In what way does that affect the experience? Do you only hate it because you don’t want things to change? Well, that’s a mistake, because that way of looking at things will make the inevitable deaths in your life hurt much more than they have to.”
  • “Disney is the most racist place on earth. Why would you go?”
  • I love ‘Dreamers of all ages’ because it really makes that super snuggly and more magical. It’s so heartwarming.”
  • Walt would never do that.”
  • Because, of course, sexual reproduction between only 2 sexes isn’t real. In other news vaccines are fake, the world is flat, and global warming isn’t real. Just because people wish there were not just two sexes, doesn’t make it true.”

Back to the broader effort, parks loosened their dress code recently as well.

“[W]e want our cast members — and future cast members — to feel a sense of belonging,” Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro wrote.

Therefore, dudes and dudettes working for Walt can now show their tattoos.

Men are welcome to sport earrings and dark nail polish:

Per Josh, such changes not only permit the company to “remain relevant in today’s workplace” but also “enable…cast members to better express their cultures and individuality at work.”

And ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls can enjoy it all; they just won’t be called that anymore.
