I wanted to make sure I reported on this today because there was a lot of erroneous information about this question being spread last night on social media.
The plane carrying the 13 military members killed in the suicide bombing attack at the Kabul airport didn’t arrive back until this morning. So any claim about it yesterday, or Joe Biden’s meeting it or not meeting it wasn’t accurate.
But Biden has gone to Delaware this morning with his wife for the “dignified transfer” ceremony of the remains.
Once the aircraft lands at Dover AFB, service-specific carry teams remove the transfer cases individually from the aircraft and move them to an waiting vehicle, according to information from Dover’s office of Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations.
The vehicles then transport the fallen to the mortuary facility at Dover for positive identification by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System and preparation for transport to their final resting place.
The thirteen who were killed on Thursday were Navy corpsman Max Soviak, Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Knauss, and Marines Hunter Lopez, Rylee McCollum, David Lee Espinoza, Kareem Nikoui, Jared Schmitz, Daegan Page, Darin Taylor Hoover, Humberto Sanchez, Johanny Rosariopichardo, Dylan Merola and Nicole Gee. You can see our memorial post to them here.
The service is private and is closed to the press in general. Family is there to receive the bodies of their loved ones.
Some of the families have already expressed deep anger at Biden for putting their loved ones in harm’s way because of his incompetent actions. So in going, he may face some of that anger. But if he didn’t go, I think that would have just ended him. He’s already shown so much lack of care in regard to everything related to Afghanistan, that might have been the final straw had he not bothered to show up.
While he’s expressed sadness for their death, he hasn’t admitted to making any mistakes in regard to the actions that put them in that situation.
His incompetent withdrawal prior to removing American citizens and Afghan allies allowed the Taliban to take over the remainder of the country and left the military having to deal with an unprotected situation at the airport, with Biden outsourcing the “security” of the perimeter to the Taliban, who were beating Americans and Afghan allies and not letting them through.
It is customary to meet with the families as part of the ceremony. But given the situation, it’s unclear whether any of them would actually want him there.
According to Townhall’s Julio Rosas, some of them do not and that’s consistent with the anger that I reported yesterday that some of the parents were expressing in very heartbreaking remarks.
Heard from a reliable source some of the families of the service members who were killed in Kabul do not want Biden to be at Dover AFB for the dignified transfers.
